Blast! I forgot! Last year I got special permission from my boss to wear my kilt to work on St. Andrew's Day (the only time I've worn it to work). I was hoping to make that a tradition. But I sure blew it this year!

Ya know... I woke up this morning thinking "I feel like dressing a little more traditionally today" and I strapped on my 9 yard MacLeod of the Isles, proper socks and flashes, etc, and I had no idea why. Now I know! Something in the back of my head must have been telling me...

I have to ask - why Saint Andrew and not, say, Saint Columba (Colum Chille)?

Well - today is the day St. Andrew is commemorated, worth mentioning because he is the patron saint of Scotland. Also, it's his cross that's on the flag, as the legend is that he was martyred on an x-shaped cross, which differentiates it from his brother (Peter's) cross, which legend says was upside-down because he expressed his feeling of unworthiness to die in the same manner as Jesus. Andrew's also the patron of lots of other places, by the way, including Russia, Ukraine, and (formerly) Prussia.
Columba is commemorated on June 7th, I think.

Patron saint gets special treatment. Secular celebration is included. Saintly saints are a personal matter. As far as why Andrew got the Patron nod, you'd have to go back and ask those that did the choosing.

It was your brain in the back of your mind telling you to put the kilt on, Nighthawk.
You should put it back in the pickle jar before it hurts someone.
Just joking, Hawk.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
