To save search time with general words.....

I am looking for the name of the garment worn under the kilt that is made of the tartan material. I know that there is an underwear like garment, similar to boxers, that can be worn but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the garment.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance oh great rabble.

Not exactly what you described, but maybe worth a look.

In the old catalogs I have seen where matching Tartan underwear was offered with the kilt they are called 'drawers'.
See this old thread for samples of one of these catalogs -

In the first post scroll down to page 20 of the catalog.
In the second post scroll down to page 24.
And in the third post scroll down to page 30.

Jdez is an old link. Although the page is still there, I believe they stopped trading a few years ago.

In common parlance they were just called "trews" or, sometimes, "undertrews"

They were universally supplied with all kilts until WW2 when clothing rationing killed them off.
Here they are in the early 50s

Second to Alex's caution about J'Dez. They not only went out of business, they kept money sent in for products and never delivered. Seems like about five years ago. Sad, they made a great underkilt.

I had the info on a lady in N.Y. State that made underkilts too but can't find it.

No clue on the tartan undergarment....I wore tartan boxers for years when at work...then I got a complaint from the boss that a client said they could see them....in these days of saggy jeans showing underwear I'm not sure how that became an issue.

Anyhow...I can highly recommend an underkilt-like garment. Protects the kilt and maintains the FREEDOM.

Ron, is this thread about Katie's Mercantile, the vendor you were thinking of?

In the 1940s when I was a wee boy in Scotland I was given a kilt and the item in question which was called trews.

Thank you detective Unixken, that is the site exactly. Have three of hers. They are a heavier weight cloth with a wider elastic than the J'Dez were before they folded.

I remain utterly baffled as to why all kilt vendors don't also offer underkilts as an add on sale.
