    tartan hose

Still working on Argyll hose to match my kilt (rather my sweet wife is)...

Here's the question she posed me...most of the professional tartan hose I've seen do not seem to have a ribbed cuff as such the way other kilt hose have. The "turn-over" seems to be a full square wide (3"?) and seems to be knitted inside out so that when it is turned over it appears the same as the sock lower on the leg.

Is there some sort of finished edge that is tucked under the "cuff" or how exactly is that done?

Can anyone who owns a nice pair of these take a couple of close-up shots or describe how the top of the hose is finished off?

    Thank you

I'm assuming you're talking about when the cuff is turned and how that is accomplished? If not, then I'm misunderstanding, but to explain-when the cuff is knit, it is knit inside out, so if you are knitting toe up, you will need to turn your hose inside out after you've knit the garter section, if there is one, and then commence knitting the cuff as if the hose were rightside. The Argyle hose I've seen have a stranded (2 color) ribbed edge. When you've completed the cuff, turn the hose rightside out and then fold the cuff down over the garter section. Another edging used to end off the cuff nicely is a garter stitch (about 4 rows) which will finish off nicely creating a rounded edge to your hose. Sorry, I don't have a pair of Argyle hose to take photos of...maybe someone else does.

I think this is what you are looking for. The hose I have are not knit inside out, the cuff is knit twice the length with the argyle pattren at the top portion. This is then folding inside and stiched, so when the hose tops are folded over they are twice the thickness. I hope this helps.

    Logan,

Oh! that's a great shot! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

BTW...are those the National Scot pattern? That's almost exactly what I am going for! My wife, bless her heart, is trying to figure out the pattern (she is an accomplished knitter) and if they come out, colour-wise, anywhere close I will be a happy camper.

    thanks again.

PS. Thistlelass, thanks for the reply. I like your instructions...specially the bit about a garter stitch making a nicely rounded edge...and showed them to my wife.

    Logan,

Gee, I hate to do this to you but could you post a photo of the whole sock or the pair of them...one from the front one from the back? Sure would appreciate it...

    Frank,

Pardon me calling you by your last name earlier.

Thank you again. That is most helpful. I have seen that identical colour combination called National Scot...here: http://www.highlandclans.co.uk/Kilt_Hose.html (and worn with a Scotland's National tartan...my first tank...on another page) It may be close to a "universal" colour combination for several tartans ...Leslie modern is another.

Where did you get yours, if I may ask?

You have to remember that "tartan hose" are really just a argyle pattern of the predominant colours in your tartan. So certain colour combanations are good for a host of different tartans. These hose were a gift from my wife, and she got them from House of Tartan, and they are the same maker as the ones you linked to. These hose are supposed to work with the following tartans ( and I guess there could be more):
    Bowie (Dalgety)
    Cameron of Erracht
    Cochrane (1984)
    Gillies
    Grant Hunting
    Logan
    MacLennan
    MacClellan
    MacLaren
    MacMillan Hunting
    Muir
    Ogilvie Hunting
    Scott
