Was finally asked the question....
So I went out Friday night with some friends for our monthly "Guys Night". Last month I showed up wearing jeans and was actually chastised by my friends for not wearing my kilt (keep in mind none of them ever have worn a kilt before and don't plan to start). Anyways, I show up to the pub in my Fergusson Sport Kilt, dark green hose and red flashed, and a few "don’ts" I'm sure. Well we're enjoying our first round when a middle aged woman who'd obviously had a few, but was not yet being obnoxious tugged on my kilt and asked "what do you wear under this?". I simply smiled looked down at myself and proclaimed "why I wear shoes and socks, what do you wear under yours?"....her husband and 2 of my friend’s snarf beer from their noses as the woman just stared at me utterly speechless.
This was my first time responding to the question and frankly I had been dreading it for no real rational reason I can think of. Now that's it's over and done with I am even more confident in the kilt. Over the last several months I have gone from going kilted maybe 1x a month to now wearing it 2-3x's a week. I’m already looking into getting a 2nd and 3rd kilt to add to the closet. There really needs to be a disclaimer on the XMARKS home page about how addicting kilt wearing can be.

I don't blame you! I can't even imagine being asked that question. I liked that you turned it around on her, IMHO, a woman shouldn't ask if she isn't willing to answer for herself.
Aren't double standards fun? You guys are great to put up with it all

Ladies 40 have gotten over the "oh, I shouldn't do that" stage. Younger women, until they've been drinking a wee bit, have a more reserved "save face" reaction, making them more reserved.
I dreaded the question until an all-too-enthusiastic lady proposed the question and almost went in to find out for herself in a pub! Now I think it's hilarious!

You're right about the younger lasses needing to be a bit tipsy. On one of our Chicago kilt nights, as we were taking a group photo, a slightly inebriated lass sidled up to one of our number and asked him The Question. He said, "I guess you'll just have to find out for yourself." And she did - to the surprise of all and the red faces of her companions.

invisikilt
With all the questions about down/up there, how about an invisikilt for the wedding night?

heh
I had an old lady stop me today..."I saw you earlier and wanted to ask you..." I thought here it comes, so I prepared my response in her head.... and she asked"Do you have anything in your flask?" hah guess the old lady wanted a bite of some Jameson..

It happened to me on St. Patties a few times. I don't think people noticed the shirt I was wearing answered the question for them. (I know it wasn't P.C.) But I wore boxers under it. It was breezy down on River Street and on Bay St. in Savannah, and i wasn't going to have a "wardrobe malfunction" with families around. So I oped for something under it. Probably going to get in trouble with the rabble on here for that, but Anyway, It was my first time in a kilt and after about 15 minutes I almost forgot I was in it, until someone would pop in front of me and ask. The attention was fun, But wearing it regardless is just awesome to experience!
