Feedback in Kilt liners - tricot

I ordered and recieved two kilt liners from G. Lieberman & Sons, Ltd. $22 each - one Size for all.
A C352 nylon tricot and a C353 sheer nylon. Nylon is cool but not absorbant - so much for protecting the wool kilt from skin oil and sweat.
As they come there is no flare from waist to hem. And this is a hobble skirt. I washed them and then stretched out the hem - the hem stitching is non stretch so I broke most of it loose - kind of stupid to use stretch fabric and non stretch hem stitching. I dosen't seem there is a kilt wearer in the house where these were designed. Why have the freedom of pleats with a hobble kilt liner underneath. They are selling these on E-bay also.
The tricot is sheer and the sheer is transparent - LOL
I sent them a mini tutorial on good kilt liner design and fabric choice. Grumble Grumble -

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Thanks for checking them out and saving me the trouble. I also found this place online but I have not tried them yet. They will do custom sizes with a taper. You have to scroll down to the bottom of the page.

I stuck this in my loin cloth post - worth repeating here:
I have found an online mom and pop business that is making me some cotton underkilts $12 each - will report back if they come out well.

Ok, this stuff dries fast. I snipped of the lose hem threads and now it dosen't bring me to a dead stop when I spread my legs sitting or long stride walking.

The note turned novella I sent the gal I am working with:

    Good Morning Katie,

I'll let you know how they are. I will bear the cost at this price as we are still prototyping. I didn't think of this one until I got a nylon tricot "kilt liner" in the mail yesterday. It was a real hobble skirt. I found out why when I washed and stretched it - they had hemmed it on this stretch material with a non stretch stitch. (eye roll here ). I went ahead and stretched it breaking most if the hem stitches - problem solved - most tricots don't fray. If it does I'll zigzag it stretched. I'm OK on the sewing machine but I go nuts trying to stitch a stretch waistband to a non stretch fabric. Ergo , I bow to your expertise. This is the link to the post string I put on the X Marks the Scot forum site:

Few of these guys (and gals) have the skill or equipment to make slips or to clean and press these wool kilts. My momma raised me right - LOL.

There is about 16,000 members on this international site. We are all making do with long shirt tails, over sized boxers with the crotch cut out, ladies half slips and various homemade t-shirt half slips. Even in Scotland it's difficult to find cleaners for the wool kilts - very few cleaners know how or are willing to take the time to reset and press the pleats. I bought a Sullivan hobby table and ironing board cover so I can do it myself. It's 36 by 60 inches and barely large enough to lay out the pleats and top apron in my kilts (and I'm skinny!) for the pressing with a cloth - still can't slide the iron, must pick up and reposition the iron.
After its pressed and allowed to rest and fully dry on the table, the pleats and pattern hold like iron in good wool and "rump pressed" wrinkles don't hold. To keep things interesting, kilts are tailored from waist to the hip fall line, about 1/3 of their length, most kilt makers sew down the pleats in this area - my thanks to them - LOL. It's still a good hour to set and press. Wool kilts cost between $150 for econo off the shelf kilts to well over $1000 for hand stitched, you provide the fabric, 7 - 9 yards of fine wool in your family tartan. Many commission, one of a few mills, to do short runs for this, at big bucks, for a few hundred yards. The fabric, like the kilts, gets passed down from generation to generation - to say these guys are picky about caring for them and who gets "the honor" of cleaning and pressing them is an understatement. - LOL.

All this info to let you know why there is a howling need for a decent kilt liner/underkilt for the kilted. Just to protect the kilt from us.

Sad to say, Anna Manning Porter who produced the custom polyester kilt liners shown in this link in a wide variety of colours under her trade name of GBK Enterprises died in September 2010.

Unfortunately it appears that these are no longer being produced.

Darn, Had her site short cutted in case working with this current gal dosen't work out.
My e-mail to Katie is giving her fair warning as to the volume of the rush she can expect when we get the kinks ironed and I cough up the site link here. So far she seems willing - poor gal!

This is my first "kilt" that led me on the path to kilt addiction and K Anon.
Super light weight nylon lycra - I picked out most of the sew down to try to improve the modesty level with some success.
Although it's nylon, the triple layer of the "pleats" keep the skin oils from wicking thru as a kilt liner.
This is now the skirts only use - for my wool kilts.
It is intended a a swimsuit cover up as the site sells a lot of swimsuits that would get you arrested in most locals.
I checked to see if they still make them - they do. They sold for $30 but now for $50

I have found a business than will make custom kilt liners for us in Mt. Morris, NY. - Katies's Mercantile
I worked with Katie and I think we have it down pat.
The turn around is quite fast, but will slow a bit during planting and harvesting seasons.

They have a wide variety of fabrics and colors to choose from.

My preferred fabric is the heavy t-shirt cotton type knit. Will sop up a lot of sweat and body oils, keeping the kilt clean.
If you get this, and intend on drying in the dryer add an inch or two to the length - it shrinks in length but not width.
Hang dry it stays true to length.

Current price is $12 each plus shipping ( which is actual postage estimate )

To order, e-mail Katie with questions and your needs.

I specify material, color, waist, length and 60 inch hem circumference.

Payment is by Paypal - she sends a bill.

Web Site: www.katiesmercantile.com The kilt liners aren't there yet.

    Email: katiesmercantile@hotmail.com
