I had that problem the first time I drive in the US too... except I also had to contend with an automatic for the first time... The number of times I went to wind down the window when I felt I needed to change gears...

The Tay Road Bridge. Photo taken while we were on holiday Aug 2011.

2250 metres in length, the Tay Road Bridge spans the estuary of the River Tay between Dundee and Newport on Tay. The bridge was designed by William A Fairhurst and was opened to traffic on 18th August 1966 having taken 4 years to build.

Probably the Scottish Bridge that is most famous OUTSIDE of Scotland,
Golfer's Bridge over the Swilcan Burn, 18th hole Old Course, St Andrews.

    Re: Bridges of Scotland

This is a fascinating and beautiful thread, and sufficient to make me go back and dig out some pics from our '09 trip.

Probably the Scottish Bridge that is most famous OUTSIDE of Scotland,
Umm, how 'bout this one? The Glenfinnan Viaduct, a.k.a. the "Harry Potter Bridge.

This one is at Achnacarry, ancestral home of the Cameron chiefs. It crosses the "Arkaig waters" that flow from Loch Arkaig into Loch Lochy. I believe the path on the other side leads to the Dark Mile.

I find a quiet elegance in both the stone and ironwork; perhaps it touches my inner steampunk.

The Aray Bridge, at Inveraray was built in 1775, the architect was Robert Mylne. A beautiful two-span bridge, built entirely of dressed stone, with segmental arches and pointed cutwaters. There is a flood relief hole between the arches.

Redshank, what's the structure on top of the crag behind the Aray Bridge? Is it just a silo, or a tower fort?

(That is a nice picture, by the way.)

it's a folly, built in 1748 at a cost of £45, it's three storeys high, built for decoration only, and to show the the Campbells had more money than sense
