Well, I finally finished the sheath for my sgian dubh. It's made of three layers of leather. The top and bottom layers are the same dark brown stock my sporran is made of. The middle layer is about three times the thickness and quite rigid.
I cut the shape of the blade and hilt out of the middle layer. The bottom layer was adhered with an industrial adhesive and allowed to set over a 24 hour period. The sgian dubh was wrapped in plastic, industrial adhesive applied to the joining surface of the leather and a top piece was clamped in place and allowed to set for 24 hours.
I pre-drilled the holes for thread with a 1/16th bit, and stitched through several times. Excess leather was removed with a course grinder, which left a burnished edge to the leather. Wax was applied to the edges and stitching, melted and rubbed in to seal and protect.
