The suffix 'ancient' appears in Forsyth's 1907 catalogue but there is refers to instances where there the older tartan and they use the term to differentiate it from the standard one.

The XMarks forum is doing odd things with images.

OC's catalogue images are not llowed to be viewed in my region (Huh..? Why?) and the image I tried to post is accepted only as a file, not an image.

As case for the techies, I think.

The best part of the page was the statement "Clan Tartans not kept in Stock made in any of above qualities in ten to fourteen days". I doubt you could get weaving to order anywhere near that fast now.

I'm going to buy myself a monocle, even though I don't need one.

I was thinking the same thing. Not even close.

Yes that's what happens in the 1909 Leckie Graham catalogue.

Under Silk Tartan Windsor Scarves the word "ancient" appears three times:

    Gordon
    '' (Dress)
    '' (Ancient)

    Munro
    '' (Ancient)

    Stewart (Royal)
    '' (Dress)
    '' (Hunt.)
    '' (Ancient)

    cf.

    Cameron (Clan)
    '' (Erracht)
    '' (Lochiel)

However in their list of kilting cloths, "Fine Saxony" and "Heavy Saxony", the range is more limited, and the "Ancient" variants and several of the other variants don't appear including the "Dress" variants listed under scarves. (Which presumably kept men from appearing in arasaid tartans...)
