OK, someone wanting "how to" info:
How do you make the tang slit?
Drill round hole and fill?
How about the scabbards?
(I am about to begin to modify a knife my wife found buried in out yard when she was planting flowers. Luckly, she didn't cut herself. The profile of the tip matches my squin dubh EXACTLY, it even fits perfectly into the scabbard).

Yep, drilled a round hole. As my good drill died the other day, & the old one has a wobbly chuck (& also the fact that I have no room to set up my mill ATM) I didn't trust it to drill a series of interconnected small holes. I went with one round the size of the tang's width, & when I fill it (probably tonight) I'll use a couple of notched pegs to take up the slack, & mix sawdust with the epoxy. Working on the sheath ATM. I haven't cut myself yet, in spite of it being a live blade. Probably a combo of clamping the blade as much as possible, & the fact that being a tattoo artist, I take special care of my hands. Infected cuts etc put me out of work until they're healed.

Question: couldn't you just put some electrical tape or something over the edge of the blade to keep from cutting yourself?

I was just amazed when I saw that pic of the chef's knife with the sgian outline drawn on it. Why that hasn't come up before I don't know. Excellent idea!

ATM I didn't want tape etc distorting the blade profile while I carve the sheath out. I'm doing the majority of the work with hand tools purely for my own satisfaction. Once the blade is fitted & I'm down to the polishing etc, I'll be masking the edge for sure. I've enjoyed this project so much, I'll be making a few others for close friends for the practice, then one for me, but that one I'll do entirely by hand with a blade beaten from carbon steel. I'd like to get a feel of what it must have been like for my ancestors.
