Sporran-Phobes Unite!

I'm always "whorin' for a sporran"... I love my black Thorfinn #74 (customizable), my brown wyvern leather sporran, and my Celtic Croft Rob Roy, as well as my SWK nylon AND brown Leather cargo sporrans. I wear whatever the mood strikes me. Pure freedom.

But I wear the kilt mostly in and around my home.

Out and about, the SWK or a leather contemporary waist pouch answers as well as anything else.

My “required” item is a belt. I feel incompletely dressed without one.

I'm a big sporran fan. They bring balance to the kilt and are very functional. All your stuff is in one, central location. With pockets, stuff is not always readily accessible.

For example, I was carrying a big heavy box, in my left hand and needed to get my keys in my left pocket. I could've put the box down, but the ground was wet, so i had to reach over with my right hand and awkwardly fish out my keys from my left pocket. If I had a sporran, they would've been right there in front with a wide opening for easy access.

Vive la sporran.

I'm just the opposite. One thing I don't like about sporrans is that everything is dumped into one location and you have to root around to find what you need. And it always seems that the item I want has settled to the bottom.

With pockets (whether on a kilt or trousers) I can put the different items into different pockets so I know where they are.

I do understand about having the wrong hand free though.

I'm a sporranaphobic...Apart from my SWK nightstalker, I don't like the way they look or draw attention away from the kilt.

Am I the only one who feels this way??? I need to do something...I mean, I wear them, but not with confidence...I just think that Sporrans are too gaudy...I don't want to be offensive...I really think it's me that has the problem, I'm just wondering if anyone else had the same experiences and how did they overcome them.

My personal feeling is that a kilt isn't complete without a sporran. However, I quite agree that most sporrans are too gaudy, especially the dress sporrans that are increasingly used for day or casual wear. My personal favourite among day-sporrans is a plain black leather sporran without tassels:

The pouch style sporrans are also nice, I'm the proud owner of a black Freelander, and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

I'm new to sporrans and went with the nylon Nightstalker. I find it like a (Gawds help me) fanny pack, but better looking.
Most traditional ones I've seen are a bit too elaborate for my tastes. The Tazmanian Devil appeals to me, as do a few others, but I don't seem to be much of a Sporran Guy (Sorry, Panache!). I think tartan kilts & others without pockets look better with them.

I feel incompletely dressed if I am not wearing my sporran. The same goes for my belt, I have to have them both. Though I most definatley prefer plain elegent leather to shiny metal and fur. The only time I would not wear a sporran is hiking in the back country as then it could get in the way, besides I would have a backpack then anyway.

I always like to have the belt on, except around the house. I don't like showing the elastic waist band. When I'm going out, I'll put on the sporran.

What about in the car? When you're sitting in your car (or anywhere else, for that matter) a sporran is just easier to get into. In a car, with your seatbelt on, it can be tricky to get something from the bottom of your pocket.

Well, Logan, I viewed the site and it was great to have different sporrans to compare...I was immediately attracted to the horse-hair sporrans for police and fire...Although they are loud, they seem less pouchy (round)...Perhaps that's it??? I like sharp edges???
