Thanks for the tips...I think I have an idea...Does anyone know somebody that works with leather or makes sporrans in the Houston, Texas area? Or if anyone wants to take on a special project that has the skills, interest , and time, I would like to make contact with them on a personal level and see if I can come up with a prototype.

I don't know if he'd mention it himself - gentleman that he is - but you should PM Turpin. (Thorfinn Sporrans).
He might even be able to assist you with some of the SIGnificant items you would want to carry...

Chase, I'm in late on this one but to second two ideas:

The military surplus are great for an understated sporran. I got mine from WPG and it is one of my favourites becuse it is understated.

This one is a no brainer. I read several posters who complain that they don't like dumping everyting in one spot. Well Turpin's the man to fix that. Beautiful leather work and all the pockets, clips or what ever that you need to keep your stuff straight.
Personally I feel lost without a sporran. I take it off for a long drive in the car or if I think it will interfere with what I'm doing. It goes to the side if I'm dancing close to a lady but other than that I want it right where I is supposed to be.

I just bought a 4-pocket waistcoat that was made for high waisted trousers and should work well with the kilt that I can put my watch, pen, and a couple other sundries in.
I think the sporran is a necessary part of a traditional style kilt, but I hate wearing them. They look great, but they always travel south and bunch up the kilt (I've still got a bit of a middle). I've looked at sporran suspenders, but I prefer the look of the belt. So I wear one when out and about and adjust it when needed, but when at home the sporran comes off.

I'm not a big fan of sporrans either. I think they tend to be either too big or too small, and are almost always inconvenient to retrieve items from. But if they were large enough to be of practical use beyond keys, drivers license and a bit of money they would begin to look like overnight bags on a string. Solution: always have someone else along who has lots of pockets. ;)

Turpin stresses that his sporrans are CUSTOM sporrans. Although most people like his general design, I'm sure he'd be happy to work with Chase. Just PM him.

I am so glad to log back in after a bit of an online vacation and see this thread!
I think sporrans have their place at fancy dress up things, but I prefer to not wear one when I am being casual. I had a post earlier showing off the german military sweater that I like to wear with my kilt on account of the large breast pocket, which makes all sporrans functionally unnecessary.
