I usually wear a military surplus sporran that is very simple and does not draw attention. We're talking plain here.
That's a good option for day wear; serves the purpose (gives you a place to stash your stuff), and looks neat but doesn't draw any undue attention. Probably why the regiments resorted to them . . . aside from the fact that they're cheap. Here's what mine looks like, and I can fix you up with one if you need me to.

Finally, it's very nice to have something kind of heavy to drop down between the legs to preserve one's . . . uh, modesty. I find it very handy to use the sporran as a visual block when sitting. Don't want to end up like the poor idiot seen next to the queen airing it all out. (Reckon he ever got another promotion?)
