			New sporran hangers

As some of you know, last weekend my SWK sporran hangers failed. twice. catastrophically. Looking at the sites listed, I only saw one that looked like what I wanted, and I bookmarked it. Then I decided I want to wear my kilt this weekend, and with the resolve born of a few free minutes, I decided to fix or make new ones. The end result:

Now, I can't wear my kilt until at least Saturday, so I can't really give it a full test, and I know it probably won't survive what killed my previous ones, but hey.
(all from Jo-Ann fabric, for good or bad.)

 I used:
polypro belt (bought just under a yard for about $1.50, used less than half of it, and it kinda looks like it goes with the nylon cargo sporran)

1/4" alum. silver chain ( 1/2 yard @ 4.79 yd) (I have just enough to make a second one...)

Heavy Duty snaps. (6 set pack, $6.99 2 sets lost in failed attempt to fix SWK hanger and to a design issue with a device to put them together.)

Heavy Duty Snap Tool ( $3.29, learned the hard way to only use to snap both units at the same time else they get stuck and ruin the snaps.)

Black D rings (4 pk for $2.29, they are sized to match the 'belt' material)

Lanyard Hooks ($1.29 for 12 of them, similar to what was on my SWK hangers.)

In all, I spent 18.78 and made 1 set, and have the supplies to make a second. I simply added the snaps to lengths of the strap, cut to be similar in length to the SWK version, cut the chain to be similar in length (18 links in this case) and attached them to the D ring.

In bulk, it could be made for about 5~6 dollars each.

Of course, I do already have my concerns, after all, only a fool thinks the first prototype will encounter no problems. For one, I don't like the lanyard clips. That is why I changed them on the previous hangers, but since one of those broke, and no larger were available, I returned to the previous style. I also am concerned with the strength of the AL chain, though I might do as well or better if I go to a hardware store. As to the nylon, it does have that unwinding tendency. I should probably have made it longer and folded/hemmed it to reduce this, and will do that if I make a second set.

Still, if the chain fails, I still have the chain from the SWK that I can use, and I intend on taking the leather pieces to a local place to see if they can replace the snaps. I'll post again after I put it to a real test, hopefully it will survive flawlessly, may it not go to battle with 100# bookcases...

My first kilt belt was a chain from Hot Topic. Just the thing with a clip at each end. I still have it in case I need it.

The webbing ends can be fused with heat, just be careful with matches! And yes, I've found better chain at hardware stores too. All in all it's a clever solution.
Not sure what problem you were having with the snaps and tool, I've used the "heavy duty" versions from Joann's myself without issue. But if you have it working now to your satisfaction all's the better.

The snaps were getting stuck (wedged) into the tool. 1 size smaller, and it wouldn't have had that problem, but I wanted them close to the size I had before.

I made something similar to use with my nylon sporran. I often pair it with a nylon "work or tool" belt from Home Depot or Lowes. I think that gives a fairly casual look. I like the way nylon parts seem to match.

Another possibility would be to make the nylon a little longer and get some swivel snap rings from the hardware store. They have a swivel loop in the one end so you don't need rings, they have a snap closure at the lower end so they hook into the rings on the short leather piece on the back of the sporran. I'm currently on the ship so I'm unable to proved any pics, but I get off next week and could include some at that time, if I can figure out how to post pics. Let me know if you're interested.

They survived for their first trial. (Ikea, again. The place that systematically destroyed the previous hangers)
I still intend on having the leather ones resurrected if possible, but I have a short term solution.

I am going to apologize to Jerry on this, I just realized that his sporran hangers are just 5.50 (but shipping is another 5) so making them myself did not really save me any money, just time. Meh. It was still a fun project, for what that is worth.
