Jock, I know I will not change your mind here, but I will endeavour to educate. The 4 yard box pleat is an older style than the 8 yard knife pleat. This style was almost completely relegated to history but was resurrected by Bob Martin and has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence of late, especially in climates typically warmer than the Highlands of Scotland. So for me they do feel different than the aforementioned 8 yarder, but they do have their place. I do take issue with being compared to a 1950's School Girl, but I also realize that was not your intent.
In all honesty most people simply will not notice a difference, if they do they do not voice an opinion on the box pleat, most will accept it as being a kilt, which is exactly what it is.
