I personally like black leather with the blue. It allows the wearer to match his kilt with lots more stuff. It allows him to wear a black sporran if he wants. The reddish color or the dark brown limits what you can (tastefully) wear.
Different strokes for different folks... That's also why it's cool to have a CUSTOM kilt maker who can change things like that from kilt to kilt!
