Big difference, basically apples to oranges. Let's take a closer look. Star Wars was basically a story of rebels trying to overthrow a government. Their budget was a bit on the restricted side, so they patched and fixed what they could with what they could find. So the rebels always looked like their ships were a bit shoddy. They were a bit rag tag. Now take a look at the Empire. Everything of the Empire was clean, polished, and shiny. They had the budget. They were able to keep it looking sweet and always in good shape.

Now take a look at Star Trek. The Enterprise is funded by Star Fleet, which has a huge budget. Therefore, much like the Empire in Star Wars, they are able to keep things looking nice and neat. They have the resources to fix things properly. They are not a rag-tag bunch of rebels.

That being said, I do recall the Enterprise being messed up on a few occasions and it looked pretty rough for a while there. The crew also got worked over. But, that ship was either blown up or fixed and the crew made it home. They got a new ship, cause, they have an unlimited budget.

Also, the rebels in Star Wars were the bad guys. There, I said it. Let the futuristic flame war begin. :P
