I've heard the analogy that if auto technology had developed like computer tech, cars would only cost one dollar and get 1 million miles a gallon. Of course, they would all be the size of Matchbox cars.
Although that tricorder may not be very small, it probably has way more computing ability that our largest current megacomputer.
And yeah, they didn't get dirty doing maintenance on the Enterprise. The only person to ever get dirty was Kirk on a planet, and he usually ripped his shirt too.
