"Good morning, Sir -- the company is formed."

The character of Captain Jerome was reportedly based on John "Handsome Jack" Twiggs Meyers, who was also the basis for Charlton Heston's character Major Matt Lewis in 55 Days at Peking.

Meyers participated in the taking of Guam during the Spanish-American War, served in the Philippines during the Insurrection, as well as in China fighting Boxers -- one of the privates in his company in China was a young marine named Dan Daly.

Meyers was aboard the USS Brooklyn during the Pedicaris Incident in Morocco in 1904.
