Indeed, but the Naval landing party band in The Wind and the Lion tops them all.

    But I digress...

All of the Marines in the scene where they storm the sultan's palace were real, by God, U.S. Marines, and the scene was shot in one take using four cameras. John Milius is almost my god...

"Good morning, Sir -- the company is formed."

The character of Captain Jerome was reportedly based on John "Handsome Jack" Twiggs Meyers, who was also the basis for Charlton Heston's character Major Matt Lewis in 55 Days at Peking.

Meyers participated in the taking of Guam during the Spanish-American War, served in the Philippines during the Insurrection, as well as in China fighting Boxers -- one of the privates in his company in China was a young marine named Dan Daly.

Meyers was aboard the USS Brooklyn during the Pedicaris Incident in Morocco in 1904.

There are a couple of short scenes with kilties in Legends of the Fall. The trench scenes especially. Why does the kilty get out on top of the trench and kick the soccer ball towards the German lines just before they charge?

It's based on an actual incident:

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Hearts FC members who served with MacRae's Battalion, 16th Royal Scots in the First World War:
