    Buttocks donor required?

I rarely bother to become exercised over comments concerning reenacting, because (frankly) those who do it well do it so well that no comment-- other than "well done"-- is called for. Those on the other end of the scale are oblivious to comment or helpful critique, so why bother?

However, I am moved for the welfare of a crofter out on the Isle of Lewis who, reading these posts and seeing these photos, is in danger of requiring a buttocks transplant as a result of suffering a violent paroxysm of laughter.

Anyone who wears a Confederate shell jacket with a kilt immediately turns the kilt into a costume, in the same way that wearing a Star Fleet tunic with a kilt turns the kilt into a costume. Despite what some may argue, in my opinion, this has nothing to do with Southern/Scottish history nor does it reflect Scottish/Southern heritage, unless one is interpreting history in a "Harry Lauder does Rhett Butler" kind of skit. In other words, cross dressing of this sort turns both the uniform of the Confederate soldier and the kilt of the Highlander into a cheap music hall joke.

Now if someone wants to wear a kilt to a SCV event, so be it. But for Gawds Sake, do it without parodying either the kilt or the Confederate uniform. Let them wear a dress Argyll jacket made up in gray barathea with matching waistcoats if they feel compelled to wear gray.

But if one insists on wearing a Confederate shell jacket with a kilt, please do the Scottish National Health Service a favour. Carry a "Buttocks Donor" card in your sporran.

Like the television commercial says, "Don't leave home without it."
