Your question is one that is argued over and over on several DIY forums. The cost in materials was less expensive, yes. The time that I put into it is the subject of the arguements. Some people add in the time they spent researching and building to the overall cost of doing it themselves compared to buying one already completed.
For me, I love making my own stuff if I am able to. If not, I love researching how to do it. For me, time was not in the equation. So, to answer your question, I did save money.
