    Re: REAL stumper... Argyll Buttons

Here is my SWAG (Scientific Wild A** Guess): Tell me if this makes sense: It’s a poor attempt at something similar to “Clann na ngael ansr am an cheile” “The families of the Highlands answer only to each other” (I don’t speak Gaelic, either Irish or Scot, but I do have some experience working with languages) I'm sure the Gaelic isn't correct, but close?
"My beloved America, thank you for your children. If your children want to become soldiers I will train them. When they are hungry I will feed them. When they are thirsty I will give them water. When they fight for freedom I will lead them. When they are unsteady on the battlefield I will motivate them. If they die on the battlefield I will bury them. So help me God."

We have had exactly this same discussion before - within the last two years. I have tried searching but can find nothing.

The worst thing is, I can't remember what answer we came to!

There have been three discussions on this topic of the words on the buttons.

The most recent and the one figheadair is referring to can be found here.

This sounds appropriate for the conditions of the time a subtle mask of ones alliance to the jacobite cause, maybe.
