The concept is straightforward: in a fingerless glove, your homeothermic countercurrent blood vascular system keeps your hands and fingers warm while you are using your fingertips.
If one were not using their fingertips, then a mitten would keep one's fingers even warmer.
When either hunting, fishing, or performing some other tasks in extreme cold, I usually have both fingerless gloves and mittens with me.
