Kilt order wait time! :?
Greetings Xmarks! I am awaiting my first kilt rather anxiously, an 8 yard tank in muted Ross hunting tartan. It is being made in Scotland and I am curious as to the average wait time. How long did yours take to show up??

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
The last kilt I purchased was in 2003, from Celtic Craft. There was a problem with the weaving of the tartan, resulting in a five month delivery time. A friend ordered a different tartan from them, and had it in six weeks.
The average times I have heard from others is six to eight weeks.

Who did you order it from?
Waiting times can vary but I would normally expect no more than 6 weeks plus time to get across the pond. Occasionally delivery times are a little shorter and can be as little as 3 weeks, but you usually need to ask for that
The best thing is to actually ask your supplier for an expected delivery date. They should be able to let you know

You may also have to think in terms of months(a lot of them!) for some kiltmakers.

The smaller ones, yes, but I'm thinking the major players. I can get machine stitched ones made with a 3 week turnaround as standard and the last one I supplied took 6 days from start to finish, but that's quite unusual
The likes of Geoffrey (Tailor), Lochcarron and House of Edgar usually quote 6 weeks but Lochcarron can also do rush orders much quicker. This is a busy time of the year for them though. Smaller independents have a bigger problem keeping up with demand all year round if they use their own kilt makers although R&I MacDonald, who are still a small independent, can keep to a 6 week lead time. It all depends but I would accept that in your part of the world, where there are arguably more independents using traditional kilt makers, supply time would be quite a bit longer

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
My RAF arrived four weeks to the day after I ordered it. I could have had it sooner but there were other kilts in the queue. Although I said that I could wait he still bumped me up the list because I was ex Royal Air Force.

There's also time for the fabric if it's special weave or out of stock. Which could take several months.

Ditto. Same supplier, same problem. Six months. Poor communications too.

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
A traveller who had visited many different countries found himself waiting out a rainstorm inside a cozy pub in the Scottish Highlands enjoying a pint in the company of the local residents.
Striking up a conversation, he mentioned that in Mexico, they have a word for putting off until tomorrow what could be done today, and asked if there was a word that implied the same thing in Gaelic.
The Scotsman took a sip of his whisky and, shaking his head, he responded: "No sir, there isnae a word in Gaelic that implies such a sense of impending urgency."

Guessing you're working with a middleman/jobber. You'd know if you were working directly with a full time kiltmaker. Welcome to the kilt jones.
Think of it as an impending surprise....or while away the time shopping for accessories.
As mentioned, wait time depends on so many factors from cloth availability to who's in line ahead of you. All factors a kiltmaker can give you a fairly accurate estimate on.
Enjoy the blissful agony of the kilt jones...
