To compete in my first games ever. Highlands Ranch, CO <190lbs division. Grabbed some DVDs on proper technique, rigging gear that approximates the real stuff. Dumb but determined. Just want to throw.

EXCELLENT. Just keep at it. Practice when you can, get some help if at all possible and then do the Nike advertisement thing....JUST DO IT!

Not exactly the games I strive for. Looking to get myself back to the 50+ mile trail runs, maybe back to a 100miler. Of course this time around the garb of choice will be a kilt to run in. Of course I will maintain my carbs by enjoying fine ales.

    Re: 2012 Goals

I posted this in another thread, but I guess I should post them in the Official 2012 Goals Thread...

As far as throwing goes, I've only competed once, and I'm still very much learning how to throw everything, so the throwing goals are a bit of a shot in the dark.

    But here you go:

    2012 GOALS

    TRAINING GOALS
    1) Assistance Work. I need to work HARD on my assistance exercises. In 2011, I ignored assistance too often, or didn't go after it with enough intensity. I need to change this.
    a) Start doing ab work. Ab work from Jiu-jitsu is NOT enough.
    b) More Posterior Chain work.
    c) Start training Triceps and biceps. Never been consistent with this at all.

    2) Dynamic Effort Work. I think some focus on lighter speed & technique work will pay big dividends. When I started squatting 3x a week my squats improved tremendously. I want to figure out how to do some lighter work on off days for other lifts as well.

    3) Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. More Consistency with my Jiu-jitsu training. This has been really difficult for me in the past 6 months, need to do better. If I'm consistent, I have a shot at getting my purple belt in 2012.

LIFTING GOALS (Current 1RM in parenthesis)
    - Squat 455 (405)
    - Bench 315 (305)
    - Deadlift 500 (465)
    - Strict Press Bodyweight (205 Press @ 215 BW)
    - Push Press 275 (245)

THROWING GOALS (Current PRs in parenthesis)
    - Braemar Stone: 30' (28-0)
    - Open Stone: 40' (37-2)
    - LWFD: 50' (47-9)
    - HWFD: 21'
    - Light Scottish Hammer: 80' (75-4)
    - Heavy Scottish Hammer: 65' (61-5)
    - WOB: 11'

    Re: 2012 Goals

It may not quite fit the timber of the discussion, but my main athletics of late is studying Tae Kwon Do along with my 13 year old daughter. We broke our first boards at the "Christmas/end of the year" party.

I should be eligible to test for my first belt this session.

Other than that, weight loss ("Not as Lean, Just as Mean, Still a Marine").

Good wishes for success and happiness to all in the new year.

I don't see this Forum as being exclusively about HIGHLAND athletics, so I think it's great that you posted this here. Besides, ecklarkb is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practicitioner..

I strongly, strongly suspect that there is a lot of crossover between the sports. For example, when I am getting ramped up for a big lift, I really try to focus. I push THROUGH the lift...not just up TO it..but THROUGH it. And this, I believe is much like what you are suppose to have in your minds eye as you attempt to break a board. Don't "punch the board"...hit THROUGH the board.

...could be wrong about that, though.

Congrats on your finish, it is quite an accomplishment. What 100 did you do? Right now I just need to get my body, mostly my feet, to put up with the miles required. Never seem to be rid of plantar tendon issues. Best of luck in your upcoming year training.

Hi Paul, the race was the Centurion North Downs Way 100, interestingly its the only one in the UK where finishers receive a buckle, which I think is the complete opposite to you guys in the states.

    Throwing goals:

Uhh, I will most likely always come in last, but I would like to come in less last this year.

I'm trying to match a NorCal thrower who is about my size.
