I don't see this Forum as being exclusively about HIGHLAND athletics, so I think it's great that you posted this here. Besides, ecklarkb is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practicitioner..
I strongly, strongly suspect that there is a lot of crossover between the sports. For example, when I am getting ramped up for a big lift, I really try to focus. I push THROUGH the lift...not just up TO it..but THROUGH it. And this, I believe is much like what you are suppose to have in your minds eye as you attempt to break a board. Don't "punch the board"...hit THROUGH the board.
...could be wrong about that, though.

You're right about that. You have to punch THROUGH the board.
Brazilian Ju Jitsu. Ooh-Rah! Tough hombre!

Re: 2012 Goals
yep and I dont throw anything(yet) I was talking about ultra running. I do however plan on doing quite a few hill races this year too, they are often incorporated into highland games events.
I also need to loose a good bit off the belly to get back to my racing weight and this year really must be consistant with my training.

Re: 2012 Goals
I paddle the dragon boat and my goal this year is to remain injury free. I was continually beset with problems throughout the bulk of last season and still host a nagging shoulder. Bad form and too much zeal are two of the primary culprits, but I believe I have the former worked out. The latter is a character flaw that I must learn to live with and manage as best I can.

Re: 2012 Goals
My first goal is to drop the 30lbs I gained after completely rupturing my achilles tendon a couple years ago. I've long returned to athletic function, but still need to drop the extra lbs. The funny thing is, I'm the guy people come to for nutritional programs and diets as it's something I've always been fascinated with and always stay current with the latest research. I just haven't put my own knowledge to work for myself.
Athletically, I'd like to give Higland games a try. Locally, the Fergus highland games have a 3 day learning camp in August, just before the games. I'd like to find some local guys who train for highland games and learn a little before August, but if not, I will go to the 3 day camp.
I'm also learning to snowboard after 30 years of downhill skiing. My wife and son have never learned to ski and would rather learn to snowboard. We took a lesson at the end of last year and we all enjoyed it, so snowboards were under the tree this year.
Outside of that, I play hockey twice a week in our fire dept. hockey league during the winter and play touch football a couple times a week for our fire dept. team in summer months. At 44, my main goal is minimizing injuries, so my chiropractor and physiotherapy benefits get quite the workout. One of the retired guys who plays in our hockey league is 74 years old. He is my role model, as I'd like to still be playing recreational sports at that age, with guys half my age.
I still hit the weights 2 times a week, but I have no goals in that regard and it's simply habit at this point. Mostly I work a lot of basic movements and posterior chain work to maintain power. I keep 1400 lbs of dumbbells in the garage that I can do just about anything I need to do, but on really cold days I pop into the local gym.

Goals for 2012:
After several set backs over the last three years, my main goal is to be on the 'right side of dirt!'
Keep xc skiing! Have fun at the racing (if we ever get snow)!
Keep biking!
Enjoy it all!
