So maybe being a wife would change my opinion... Nope. Kilts on men are manly.
I've got a plain black one, my wife didn't want me wearing it when she had some friends pop in, (she said it looks too much like a black skirt ) so I had to change into my McDonald tartan instead

It's all abt the tartan pattern... There's something abt it that says, "I am a kilt and a man wears me."
Unfortunately the plain colors don't say that as much and they end up sometimes looking like skirts. Although some black ones with a sporran and traditional belt and buckle can look like a very nice kilt.

My wife started out suportive, but recently asked why I needed more than one kilt. And used the word "obsessed". She wears pants and sees nothing wrong with that. But on the whole shes not too bad. My 27 year old daughter called me wierd. Maybe it's mid-life crises for me, but I like the kilt and I'll wear it if I want.

Don't forget that a lot of solid color kilts appear in history. I asked this same question and started a very informative thread.

I'm also very fortunate that my wife encourages my kilt wearing. She understands that it's an outward expression of my heritage, and she loves the way I look in them. It definitely helps when I wear the more Irish versions. She's Irish and Welsh.

While just to give a quick update. She's soften up. Sunday morning I showed here Stillwater Kilts and USA Kilts, telling here the difference between prices, pros/cons and that I'd like to get one when I have the money. She's very interested in me having either a National Irish or Irish Heritage tartan... seeing that I'm Irish by marriage now. But likely I'll get the HW Irish saffron, unless something pushing me to the wool economy SWK has.
But I will use the advise you guys left while I wear, and as I mentioned Michigan summers I will be wearing it.

Nik, I'm glad to see that your wife has 'relaxed her objections somewhat', shall we say? Good luck with your pursuit of the kilt, and remember that you have the whole XMarks Clan supporting your endeavours.

my wife likes the kilts, with a caveat. she went to a catholic school locally, and she does not want me to wear my black watch unless we are going somewhere out of the parish. black watch has always been one of my favorite tartans. i wore a khaki uniform at jesuit high school and refused to wear khaki pants for about 10 years; so, i can understand her point of view a wee bit. i definitely know what kilt i will not be wearing at her next high school reunion, though.

Nik,
Glad to hear the good new...my wife was not very interested when I first started kilting, nor were my daughters. Most of them have come around, but still not fully 100% supportive...yet!
The first kilt I "purchased" was a SWK in HW Saffron, I already had a USAKilt in American Heritage.
My suggestion would be to get a tartan kilt to go with your Xkilt. Starting out it was easier to explain a tartan kilt than a solid to those not in the know. USAKilts are great everyday wear garments. If they get soiled just toss it in the wash...sewn pleats hold up better....PV is lighter fir those humid summers we get.
Don't get me wrong...Jerry and SWK are fantastic. I have for my own reasons wanted to stay away from acrylic fabric so I only buy SWK HW. They are a little warm for hot summer days, but still more comfortable that shorts.

Here's the thread I just posted showing my new Stillwater HW Saffron. You can't beat it for the price.

You got one because you didn't have one. You then get two because you only have the one. Then you get another because, well gee, you've got two by now. A third won't hurt. You get the fourth because ....
You get the idea. It's kind of like honorary degrees. And tattoos. And sgian dubhs. And sporrans. And hose. And jackets.
I better stop.
