The first kilts I made were pretty standard, and I found that I was constantly snagging the right side of them - door handles, knitting machines, bushes and fences - but the left side just floated past the hazards.
It seemed logical to create both sides with the pleats pointing backwards and they work, rather like the feathers on a bird's wings the pleats fold one under the other.
