For me, this has implications on when and where it is appropriate to wear the kilt and leads me to the conclusion that what might not be "too traditional" at a Highland Games may simply be inappropriate on other occasions because "traditional" is not relative to that situation (to tie it all in to the original question). Others will - and do - differ in their opinion.

TWEN, I mean, um THIRTY YEARS AGO, I wore a suit to college football games. We all did in those days, and only in part to conceal the flasks.
