I've posted this in another thread, but my favourite was a parishioner (one of the very few ladies in the parish who is younger than myself) who approached me with her family when I was standing in front of the church togged out for a special event at the church. I liked her response because it gave me quite an opening.

She came up quite amazed it would seem, and asked (stuttering) Is that... is... is that real? I know she was probably asking if it was my clan (actually it was my clergy tank) but it gave me a great opportunity to answer. I looked her solemnly in the eye and answered, "No, you're imagining it. Actually I'm standing here with nothing on." Her family laughed, she blushed, I laughed, we gave each other a little hug and I explained the clergy tartan.

    Fun!

i will preface this with the son (buck) telling me "yes" and the wife telling me "no" the night before at their house: at my irish friend's funeral monday, his kids literally laughed and clapped when i walked into church in full kilted regalia (county mayo kilt). for the recessional, when i took my pallbearer spot across from buck, he smiled and nodded.

Weeelll - once I was walking along the row of shops near us and passed a young couple, she was wearing a narrow strip of denim for a skirt and a couple of handkerchieves worth of fabric for a blouse and it was losing the fight to stay closed - I was almost out of earshot when he enquired 'why doesn't your skirt move like that?'
