While I am not a vegan, I also do not advocate the slaughter of animals for sport. My feelings are more like those of the Native Americans - kill only what you intend to consume and then eat what you kill and use the remains as much as possible. That would include tanning the hide for leather, using horn and bones for tools and the remainder for fertilizer for crops. If no animals died and decomposed, there would be significantly less vegetation. If there was less vegetation, we would have fewer animals.

In short, we need all other forms of life - animal and vegetable. Use them wisely and they will last forever. Waste them and they will be gone. This can be applied to all natural resources - water, coal, oil, trees, minerals etc. Recycle and re-use whenever possible.

As a hunter I would not advocate "slaughter of animals for sport" either. I eat everything I harvest and in fact it is illegal in every jurisdiction that I am aware of to allow game meat to be wasted.

I doubt it makes any difference to the duck if he ends up in the belly of a Native American or a Caucasian one. After all we of all races are the descendants of skillful and successful hunters (those without skill or success left no descendants).

Ladies and Gentlemen has this thread moved off the intent of the original poster? Have we gotten on to a side track that has many different sides not related to kilts? Should we move back to a discussion of synthetic materials that may be usable for sporran making and leave the discussion of why to use one material or another?

This is not a criticism of any of the points of views, they are all personal opinions and therefore all correct for that person.

If you see abbreviations, initials or acronyms you do not know the Xmarks FAQ section on abbreviations may help.

Apologies Friday, I just could not leave "slaughter for sport" unanswered. I promise not to repond to anything else on this thread unless I discover a maker of cabbage leaf sporrans, (assuming it is OK to violate the veggies).

Sadly I don't see one at the moment to post a link to, but if he keeps an eye on ebay I have occasionally seen synthetic horse hair sporrans that are attached to a backing of a reinforced nylon. The one's I've seen don't have a pocket on the back but would give him an option for more formal settings.

Singlemalt I fully understand, I have hot button topics and certain statements that I HAVE to respond to. I have learned to stop typing and go get a cup of coffee. Then come back delete what I have typed and go to another thread.

You have a lot to share here and on other threads, lets not be sucked into the mud of the bogs. It is bad for the pleats and swish.

I read that plants have feeling, too.
