Though George V and Czar Nicholas II were cousins, Nicholas was not descended from Victoria. It was Nicholas’ wife, Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova (née Alix of Hesse and by Rhine) who was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. But to show you how intermarried these royal families were, Nicholas’ mother was Dagmar of Denmark whose sister Alexandra was the wife of Edward VII of the UK and whose brother George was the grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The First World War looks like a family feud that got out of hand.
