I happen to know that Steve served as an "airwing" Marine, as was I. In our working uniforms, at least in my day, regulations forbade the use of shoe polish on our work shoes, since shoe polish which came into contact with even a little spilled LOX, liquid oxygen for the pilot's breathing systems, could burst into flame.
I'm sure that's why Steve didn't polish those shoes, and for a formal occasion, his spit shine would be blinding!
