Fergus Wood said they only traveled with the original once and that they would never ever do it again! Said it was SO NERVE wracking and it has to me light tight and temperature controlled.
and to give you a clear picture of how big this sword actually is my height is 5'4 and
soooo it's huge.
I couldn't wield it!

It was a specialised tool for a specialised job. There was a lot of special technique developed and used for this particular instrument which we shan't go into (I think the Mods are being very gracious by allowing me to tip-toe this close to the line).

Nice picture Seasaidh Linne. I never saw why someone would need such a big toothpick

By the way Bren, I like the useage of an ä in point 4 but unfortunately it's just a Langschwert very much as in longsword.

and sure that my posts are littered with mistakes.

I had the opportunity to examine the Wallace broadsword at the Wallace Monument in 2007. The docent I spoke with there was a retired police detective who had been involved when the original sword was stolen (briefly) in the 70's or 80's--I have forgotten when he said it happened. In those days it simply was "hung on a nail" as the docent said. He said the sword was recovered and he got to transport it back to the Monument (and to a better security setup). You could still hear the thrill in his voice about getting to hold the weapon. He told me that he met Mel Gibson at the premier of the 'Braveheart' movie. The best quote; "...and the sword was several inches longer than Mr. Gibson was tall!" It was a great visit in Stirling for me that day.
