Garters on the outside?
In a number of pictures on one of the "How to wear" threads, I noticed several pix with the garters being worn on the outside of the hose, just below the folded top. Opinions?

You are likely looking at castellated hose, which do not have a turn-down cuff. That's the only hose style I know of where the garters are intended to show. Identifiable by the shaped top vs. flat horizontal line of a turn-over.

I've seen it done on ALL kinds of hose in Scotland !
I therefore do it myself.

If you had a pair of hand knit or hand woven garters it would be a crying shame to hide them under the fold.

I'm currently having a pair of slightly wider tie garters made for me to play with. I might try the "on the outside" thing with both the garter and the sgian. But I won't continue as I don't want this thread to be moved due to rule 5.

I think one has to be very careful, particularly with day wear, that one does not turn one's attire into a costume, or even worse, an outfit fit for a clown.

Yes, what I saw was about the same as the gentleman leaning on his walking stick, tied in a bow. I'd be interested in hearing what some of you Scottish attire historians have to say about outside garters, considering there seems to be a range of opinions on here.
