I've used the doggy stakes as well, with good results. They are also common at RV centers for holding down awnings.

We've got one location where we set up tents each year that is virtually all rock. This year the guy next to me showed up with a cordless industrial hammer drill and pitons—gotta love it. MORE POWER.
