A golf shirt and a big hat that shades you from the sun would be appropriate at a Highland Games.

Over thinking, again. Just wear the same thing that you would wear with trousers, but change the trousers for a kilt. Socks/no socks, belt/no belt, sporran/no sporran, shoes/boots/sandals, long sleeves/short sleeves/T Shirt it's really up to you. If you like the look and it's comfortable you are good to go. It's casual, there are no kilt cops/rules.

Just make sure the pleats are at the back and you'll be fine!

Re comments about a revised / new actual physical book on wearing kilts in this day and age and given the plethora-plus of options...
...personally 'can write prose / text at the drop of a kilt pin and have some experience there with.
Needed would be collaborator(s) with credible expertise / background knowledge...
...e.g., "10 Looks with the same kilt" in this forum, except there would be 20 or more, given solid colours, utility types, reenactor, leather, work-wear, games-wear, ultra-casual, hot weather, steampunk.... in wearing and photographer.
Something like, "Kilt Wearing in the 21st Century, A Guide to Styles and Options."

Saw a guy wearing one backwards at Motor City Comic Con last month. Couldn't bring myself to say anything.

So have I. I let it slide. The only gentleman I stopped and quietly talked to, was still wearing the basting stitches. He didn't know to remove them.
