Why would there be any problem with knitting in the 18th century when the knitting frame was invented in 1589 - the 16th century?
It did stutter a bit at first, but became a roaring success eventually. In 1663 there was a London Company of Frame Knitters controlling the industry.
In 1812 there were an estimated 25,000 knitting frames in England alone.
All those pink knitted undergarments sometimes seen in Westerns were all exports from England and Scotland, the yarn dyed, spun in factories and knitted on the frames.. By the tens of tons every year.
