My favourite way to dress in contemporary style is ultra casual. As an academic I often work from home, and I like to wear my Sportkilt around the house in the hot summer months with just a tee shirt and maybe some flip flops. In the spring and fall, I'd be more likely to wear my Utilikilt with wool socks, house slippers, and maybe a hoody.

Every now and again I might dress in contemporary style when headed out to the pub or to a friend's house. This would usually entail scrunched hose and parade boots, paired with either just a tee shirt or shirt, vest, and tie depending on the event.

If I'm getting dressed up, however, I would go traditional. There are some contemporary options for dressing nice, business attire, or dressing up well (21st Century Kilts and some Steampunk styles come to mind), but judging by this thread it appears that I'm not the only one who veers towards tradition when they need to take things up a sartorial level... That being said, I'm hoping some people will post dressier and/or more formal contemporary looks that are less traditional in order to give me ideas!

I have been thinking on this and honestly do not wear a kilt in a non-traditional manner very often. The only real non traditional way I wear the kilt frequently is just with a simple tee-shirt when lounging around but feeling like wearing the kilt. I normally still wear hose, sporran, etc. in a more traditional manner.
This past winter, for a party we hosted for a football (American) playoff game, I decided to try something a bit different and more contemporary. I have not worn a kilt like this since, but here is a photo...

I think that works very well. Just need to make sure you like a team which matches the tartans you have.

Basic tartan kilt, a black t-shirt and hiking boots….kilt hose sometimes scroonched, sometimes worn regular. Sweater if it's cold, leather jacket if it's possible.
I'm going to a Crawdad Boil (rare event her in Chicago) this Saturday and will be wearing the above…with the t-shirt from last year's Crawdad Boil. I will be sure to get a photo.
Best,
AA

Well, I wear a kilt pretty casually when I throw! And to work. And some days when I'm just doing whatever.

My fiance has been referring to my normal look as "hillbilly highlander". Camo ball cap, T-shirt or denim work shirt, kilt, dirk belt, black hose with a buck 110 in lieu of Sgian, and red wing loggers.

Ern,
Thanks for including a shot with sandals. I frequently, in warm SoCal, wear sandals with my kilt. I would venture to say most Saturdays.
It works well with a casual kilt, PV, RKilt etc. As an addition, having mentioned warm weather, in contrast to Steve's Fedora I like a Tilley hat for the sunny hot days.

When I'm going contemporary, this is probably my favourite outfit (I'm second from the left). This black shirt has epaulettes and scalloped pockets which evoke the styling on an Argyll, but I like that it's a simple, black, button down shirt. I wear this with jeans on stage a lot as well.
For my contemporary look, I opt for the simplest sporran possible. Black leather, no tassels and simple charcoal hose, (sometimes scrunched down) and ankle boots.
I also wear a white metal plate belt buckle with this look to pick up on other silvery elements in the outfit such as my watch, the second buckle on my hip etc... for this reason, I sometimes also wear my monk strap shoes.

This look is certainly modern but reflects my personal casual style. If I'm going casual in the kilt, which I do far less than I did when I was fronting a Celtic rock act, this is an approach that I think looks contemporary but not sloppy. That's what I go for with saxon attire also.
Here another pic of the same outfit. I'm second from the right in this pic.
