My IOS is my go-to kilt and it happens every time:

Old Lady: "What clan is that?"

Me: "It's actually not any clan. It's Isle Of Skye."

Old Lady: (expression changes to a mix of consternation and disbelief) "Oh, really?"

They don't know much, but they do know that every kilt represents some clan.

I've got to get a kilt in West Virginia tartan, and really blow their minds.

I have received that same response mostly from the older set. Especially if they or their parents were from Scotland. The last time that happened the lady was open to the idea that maybe not all tartans are clan related. When get such a comment I use the UPS tartan and the US state tartans as an example non-clan tartans. Many of the "tartans must be clan related" are just blown away that a US state could have a registered tartan. The one lady was also confused about my choice of foot wear. Had on my boots with boot socks pushed down. I told her the boots and pushed down socks was a modern adaptation as traditional wool kilt hose would be too hot in this area if wearing a kilt for casual wear. She accepted that answer.
