Fascinating.....kilts that are pleated all around, or just in front.
Many of these are of M'Lord somebody or other, but not all. I'm interested to see the paintings that are of people who are NOT nobility.
They're much more rare, of course.

Yes, feileadh beag(s) pleated all around; in all probability down via a draw-string.
Common people couldn't afford to have a portrait painted and this period was before the romantic period so not many artists would have wasted expensive canvas and paint on something that wouldn't sell.

Detail of a painting from 1780 by David Allan I believe....though I expect he is depicting a scene in the past.
I'm not sure what to think about this....I wish it were larger.
Another detail from the David Allan painting of 1780 .....I don't know whether this is true or not, but I would *guess* that he is trying to depict a scene in the past. However, I came across a painting by him, dated around 1780 of a Campbell lord and his family, so maybe not?

Ah, thanks to Wikipedia, I know rather more about David Allan, now! Here's the whole painting...I hope this isn't so large as to blow up everybody's screens.

Here are a few more by him, showing "regular" people. This one, of the musicians was done in 1780. I thoroughly enjoy this picture, because it's of nobody with a big title. It's not a posed portrait of M'Lord, it's just two Scottish men playing instruments in 1780-. And one of them is wearing a kilt. How could he be wearing a kilt, post-Culloden but before Proscription was lifted?
If you look closely, you'll discover that the two gentlemen in this painting are EXACTLY the two which are playing for the Highland Wedding. Allan "recycled" the theme, clearly. He just changed the colors of the clothing. The posture is exactly the same, and the people, the actual people are the same.
While not tartan, I find this one to be fascinating because they're playing GOLF.

That Allen painting is in Blair Atholl and is of a wedding. I LOVE that image. The violinist is the one and only Niel Gow and I believe the other chap is his brother.

If you're looking for portraits of unknowns, this isn't it. Neil Gow, seated with the fiddle, was like a rock star at the time.
