I did an odd thing this past weekend.

I tossed three kilts in the garbage can.

Two were camouflage cotton/poly. Years ago on a backpack trip the mice had gotten after one of them. I repaired the damage but then weekend before last I got a mess of PL100 polyurethane glue on it. Ooops. Oh, well. It served me well for about 7 years. The other one, I never liked it all that much, anyway.

The tartan kilt was one I made from old Fraser and Kirkbright poly-wool. There was really nothing wrong with it, I had just stopped wearing it, long ago.

It was very strange to actually put kilts in the TRASH. Very strange. so now I'm down to

    MacNaughton, Ancient wool 8 yard
    Capercaillie, modern wool 6 yard
California Tartan, modern, box pleat (s)
Grey Stewart, lightweight wool 7 yard (s)
    Gryphon Kilts contemporary
    Lindsay, modern wool/poly 6 yard (s)
    MacNaugthon, weathered polyester-viscose 6 yard...my throwing kilt.
Scottish National, synthetic 8 yard from the Gold Bros.

I'll be adding the Wilcat Tartan kilt someday. I might wait until I lose 30 pounds to make it, though. Kilts marked with an (s), above are currently too small for me to really wear. If I lose 30-40 pounds I'll fit in them again. Then I'll have to decide what to do with the others. The MacNaughton, ancient, I'll re-sew. The Gryphon Kilt, I'll have to give away, regretfully. The Scottish National, I'll probably re-sew, as the over-apron is all wonky anyway and all I have to do to make it right is re-do the edge of the over-apron and the corresponding waistband. One afternoon and it's done. I have four yards of MacNaughton PV, so I'll throw away the current kilt (it's sun-faded anyway) and make a new, simple one just for athletics.

One good thing is that now I have more kilt hangers in my closet than I have kilts to hang on them! I am feeling like 9 kilts is wretched excess. I sure didn't feel that way a few years ago!

    Alan,

In my humble opinion, nothing that is loved by someone can ever be in excess, be it pictures, peoples, or kilts. You got each kilt for a reason. Each, in turn, has memories attached to it,
memories that will remain with you all of your life. Even if you only wear a particular few kilts now, each time you see one of the others, these memories, hopefully all good, will come back to you and remind you why you got that kilt in the first place. Kilts are like friends and Jello, you can never have too much.

May your "excess" bring back to you many great memories of the past. May your present and your future be as happy as your past.

Sometimes things are really trash even though we would like it to be otherwise. Very brave of you to pitch them! That mindset is something Eric and I are working towards, he has more trouble with it than I.

Sounds just like Susan and me.

Simon Fraser fought as MacShimidh, a Highland chief… wrapped and belted in a plaid over the top of his linen shirt, like his ordinary kinsmen. He put a bonnet on his head, and stuck the Fraser emblem, a sprig of yew, in it. With the battle cry, A'Chaisteal Dhunaidh and the scream of the pipes, they charged to battle.
