    Can't help with the tartan (which to my eye looks somewhat like Cameron of Erracht), but from the movie, the rifle looks like a British P-14 Enfield in .303 caliber, scoped for sniper use.

    Without I hope contravening rule 11, you will find the book “ Sniping in France” by Major Hesketh-Prichard D.S.O., M.C. illuminating on that subject.

    I have found it. It is interesting. It can be bought on Amazon in both paper and hardback and the text can be read here.
