A little disapointed.
Although I've been at X-Marks for quite a while, I've only in the past month or two owned a kilt. It's a 4 yard, poly-vis, Bear, Hunting Stewart, and I've never enjoyed a peice of clothing more in my life. Well, today I had my first "out and about" kilted experience. I went to the library.
NOT ONE SINGLE REACTION! Zip, nada, nothing, gornisht. No cat-calls, no looks, no sideways glances (that I noticed anyway), not even one snickering idiot! I couldn't even get anyone to make eye contact with me for Pete's sake.
I think my next trip is going to have to be to Colorado so I can visit Glen's coffee shop. I have a feeling he's hogging all of the fun up there. Either that or I need to visit a wilder place than the library.

Try going to a Mall and then expect comments from the hip-hop crowd. That was my experience anyway. Out and about walking the dogs I've had a few look and stares but no comments. The closest I came was a couple fo guys on the other side of the street up called out something unintelligable.

Aaron,
Please do come to the coffee shop, I cannot handle all the love by myself
I do understand what you are saying, I go days on end without a word of joy or disgust to pass my ears, no matter where I go. Yes as Galant said Malls are a great place to be, tons of activity. But it also depends on the Mall. I go to restaurants (small local ones are the best) and yes have even gotten a free meal for donning the kilt (sorry Graham, that you had to hear this again).
I go to different parts of town and different towns and get great comments, but then again sometimes get no comments at all. Walking downtown is fun, but that also depends on the time of the day as to comments.
I have gone to many local concerts of local bands and have some great comments, even from the bands themselves (especially if they are a Celtic band). I have gone to the symphony kilted (James Galway was at one concert and a lot of guys with kilts were in the audience). Movies, and the theater are great, art show openings just seem to bring out the comments.
I was at a Mall in Colorado Springs about a month ago and noticed a Celtic shop, so naturally I had to go in. The lady behind the counter said WOW! we have never had someone just walk in with a kilt on before. Enough people came in and browsed in the store and even bought things while I was there, that they let me have a sporran at their cost because business was great for them. I also bought some kilt hose which is what I originally went in to get.
Good things come to you when you walk around with confidence, and especially while kilted, that it is just a natural thing. It definetly does show and wearing of the kilt has really blessed me with confidence, that it shows! So you must be emitting confidence.
I kind of like it when nothing is said, makes me feel that I am accepted as a happy kilted gent.

I have been wearing a kilt regularly for over a year now. I very rarely get comments of any kind, and it is not because people are use to seeing kilts. My guess is that they normally do not want to say anything, atleast to my face, considering I am 6'4" and 300lbs. No comments from ladies because my wife is usually with me.

Hey Aaron. Yeah YOU. Pasty legs! Was it dark when you woke-up this morning? You accidentally get into the wife's wardrobe?
Feel better now?
I'm just so proud that I could be the first snickering idiot!

library...
The reason you didn't get a reaction at the library is that:
1. Librarians are an eccentric bunch in general, and like things beyond the norm.
2. Libraries are centers of learningand knowledge, and as such, ignorance is frowned upon.
Either that or I need to visit a wilder place than the library.
Come to the library I work at when its midterms, with students swarming all over the place after procrastinating on a book review!
Cheers,
Todd

Yeah, it's Thursday of Dead Week and you don't EVEN want to see the 2nd floor Library computer cluster right now. If anything breaks in the next five days, believe me, I will get NO sleep.

Some days I get several comments, some days, none. Around the University "different" gets hardly a passing look. Downtown I sometimes get some stares. The folks in church love my kilt, but then I'm a Presbyterian.
