Need Some Trans-Atlantic Travel Advice

Freelander lives in southern Norway, and pays something like $46 return flight to Glasgow.

Sounds like one of those Ryanair flights that flies from remote ex-military airfields. They do Torp (which they call Oslo) to Prestwick (which they call Glasgow) very cheaply, although since Freelander's destination is Dumfries, Prestwick will actually be more convenient for him than flying to Glasgow Airport.

Now that you've made your flying decision the only advice I can give you: hypoxia can be your friend. Purchase 3 beers after takeoff. Down two and sip the third. You didn't want to watch the movie anyway, did you?

That's right Alex Sten Rune and I live an hours drive from Torp. Flying within Norway is dreadfully expensive. I've only done it when the company I work for have paid the bill.
Poor old Patrick would have to pay ?250 or so just to get to Torp.We are just lucky. My sister and Niece flew Ryan recently and it was all right. They advertise the tickets for 1KR and then add taxes and baggage prices so all in Sten Rune and I paid £53 for the flight return and a further £60 for a car for the weekend.
Not bad considering what others have to pay

Ok, ok...Robertson warned me off of Heathrow but the only (barely) reasonable rate I could get and still get some extra legroom and a seat that I might can sleep in was from British Airways

. From here that means Heathrow.

I was going over BA's recommendations today and lo and behold they tell me it takes (minimum) 75 minutes to go from Terminal 4 where I arrive to Terminal 1 where I depart for Glasgow. I have 70 minutes between flights and thought that would be enough to even pause for breakfast.

Anyone familiar enough with the airport to know if I need to get a later flight to Glasgow?

PS: How are they with baggage handling??

Customs is where the big hold-up will be. I think it took me about 15 minutes just to get to customs, then another 10-15 standing in line. It'll probably take about another 10 to get through. Make sure you have your passport and other documents (flight info, etc) ready when you get to the counter. There's nearly 45 minutes just for customs, though it might not take that long.

They were great with my baggage, and I didn't have any problems. You'll probably have to receive your luggage, then check it again for the adjoining flight though, due to customs.

The tram between terminals only takes a few minutes. I'm wondering if they're estimating 70 to include the time in Customs. Who knows.

Honestly, I'd suggest looking for a flight with some more time between when you arrive and leave. Heathrow's a really nice airport, but it does take some time to get around.

Oh, another thing, make sure you read up on what you can take onboard the flight with you. It seems to change all the time, but was restricted to just one small laptop bag about a month ago.
