James, congratulations on being on the receiving end of a beautiful kilt and stunning waistcoat - they work so well together. I feel (maybe I shouldn't say this!) that the red tie, whilst complimenting the hat, does little for the kilted outfit as there is too little red in the Galbraith tartan to be 'picked up'. Maybe dark blue, or even the green, would be more effective. Having said that (and I'm sorry to be critical on Boxing Day), the red tie does add to the Christmassy look. Nice one!

    Hamish,

Your advice is always welcome. For some reason the red works better (in my opinion) with the Galbraith ancient tartan (which is odd because it is the exact same red stripe in both). I happen to have two navy ties, one with small red rampant lions, the other with small yellow rampant lions*. I will wear one or the other the next time I wear this outfit. Thanks for the idea.

    Cheers

    * This one also features small red bands of the text "NON ILLEGITIMI CARBORUNDUM" so I imagine it is best worn when one is feeling daring.
