A properly felted knit bonnet practically looks like it's made from thick woven cloth. When held up to the light, you can't see through the knitting.

I guess they knit them oversized, and then boil `em down to their proper, felted size....

A little secret... I can't knit very well. Hence the need for testing felting on crochet.

Well, Dread, I don't dance too well either, but it doesn't keep me from trying. (Especially if there is an ample quantity of the aqua vitae.)

But I'm pretty sure you're knitting will outdo my dancing, so give 'em both a try and let us see how it all comes out. I'd like to see the felting process myself.

I'd think the end result would be similar: a closing and tightening up of the body of the bonnet. The trick is to figure out how much oversize to crochet it initially...!

Hey, Dread, if it's any help, I'd definitely sign up for one, if you decide to do it.

    Fulling "fullness"

    Hullo all
I had thought that the knit bonnets should be more fully "fulled"... here is a closeup shot of the 19th century type that I made up... you can't tell where the stitches are

Here is a before and after shot:

And also one showing just how big the "before" is:

Last is a shot of one of the finished bonnets:
