Does liquor really help keep you warm, or does it just make you not care?

My experience is that it makes you colder. But since I didn't care it didn't matter.

No it is not true, it is just a old Kilties tale. Wear a wool kilted skirt. And no they don't itch!

Alcohol will lower your body temperature, making the temperature outside your body seem warmer relative to the temperature inside. Not a recommended way of keeping "warm" when it's cold out.

Actually, I think what happens is that alcohol causes vasodilation, so your extremities which would normally be vasoconstricted and cold to the touch, become warm. Unfortunately, this makes you lose heat faster than you would otherwise, and thus become colder overall. But, as many have pointed out-you just don't care. It's been said that alcohol acts as "antifreeze", but I suspect that the blood levels necessary for this would probably kill you!

    Be well,
