I've personally never seen anyone wear the Prince Charlie without the vest, or with a straight tie. That's not to say that you couldn't do either.
Incidentally, where did you order the Agyle from? Sounds like a local place if they loaned you a P.C. Was it the Thistle and Clover?

Did they not have a vest available to loan you? Also, I purchased a plain black bowtie from a rental shop (the type that supplies prom and wedding garb) for about $4. You might try something like that...

No they did give it to me, but I wasn't sure about the formality and tie stuff. Our congregation is somewhat laidback type, lots of jeans and dockers amoungst the men. I know I'll have a couple friends try to give me a hard time about my "dress" as they put it.

You might try a nice sweater. Not as formal but will look good.
