You know, the kilted scenes are great and it's a pretty damn good film. The cast was first rate.
And it reinforced my desire to get a kilt in the Balmoral tartan.

I like the muted colors of the Balmoral tartan myself. To get it however you have to basically get permission from the Queen. It's a private Royal tartan and HIGHLY restricted.

    Don't I know it.
I wrote off for permission a long time ago and was basically told 'The fact that you really like the tartan and think the Queen is nice doesn't mean you get to wear it.'

I might have to compromise and just get something like the Granite tartan.

    Balmoral Tartan

Tartanfinder lists about five variants of Balmoral.

Arthur, here photographed at Carter Bar in 1990, was authorised to wear the Balmoral tartan.
Regional Director for Scotland for Clan Cunningham International, and a Scottish Armiger.

See, it was the original balmoral I wanted. The one designed for/by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
But I've never been given permission to wear it, let alone get any of it to make a kilt with.

I guess I can try again, though.

And, to keep this on topic, I really do reccomend the Queen as a film with favourable kitage in it.

I would presume that only the Royal kilt makers would be able to obtain a supply of the tartan to begin with.

I also presume that the film makers were able to get permission in order for the tartan to be depicted in the film.

The tartan was also used in the TV series Edward and Mrs Simpson when it was worn in several scenes by Edward Fox who was playing Edward VIII.

I wonder if there is a set of rules/guidelines somewhere about who may apply for and gain permission and who makes the decision on the Queen's behalf as she never replies to letters personally. Was the refusal signed by a Lady in Waiting Arlen?

From the STA's article on royal tartans:

[the Balmoral tartan] is worn by HM Queen herself as a skirt and several members of the Royal Family but only with the Queen's permission. The only other approved wearer of the Balmoral Tartan is the Queen's personal piper. The Estate workers and Ghillies wear the Balmoral Tweed.
I would image permission to wear the Balmoral tartan must be earned through service to HM, such as the Queen's personal piper.

    Regards,

    Todd

I think it was like 'Second undersecretary to the office of...'
It was a long time ago and I never kept the letter.
    Maybe I'll try again.

Has anyone seen Last King of Scotland? Is it good?
